In Spain, Easter is celebrated with parades and processions everywhere called:
Semana Santa
Huge religious images are carried on floats, each one needs up to 60 humans carrying the weight using poles. This happens through towns and villages all over Spain.
Last night we went along with friends to watch this dramatic festival at Torrevieja, you don´t have to be religious to see, feel, and be immersed in awe. Such a vibrant atmosphere was electric. Huge roars of applause as each icon passed by.
We had to park the car and walk for 20 minutes to find our spot! After standing watching for hours we left at midnight, with the parade still going strong. So here´s a few photos, I must´ve taken over a hundred.
The crashing sound of military drums, every marching step sent shivers down my spine.
Tears in my eyes.
I have much respect for Spanish culture, whole families together, no sulky teenagers, no drunken yobs.. Bars and restaurants were open and empty, sole reason being just so people could go to the loo! When I popped in, the festival was being shown live on TV.
Hello mum, bet you never thought you´d see the day when your daughter was on Spanish TV while watching a spectacular religious festival!!!!
The atmosphere was truly profound and very moving.
Our own little crowd.
Protection at the end of every blocked artery road.
This was a peaceful Christian festival with thousands of people in the streets. Sadly, in the troubled world we live in, protection is a priority,, as important as the parade itself.
a very moving evening with very good friends
